It seems that couples that play together, stay together. But, just because you're doing it, should your significant other follow suit? How much imitation is too much?
Couples Halloween costumes can be cute. From Mickey and Minnie to Tarzan and Jane, Elvis and Priscilla to — yes this year I witnessed a hilarious pairing of — Aunt Jemima and (his) box. Coordinating a costume with your significant other can be a cute sentiment, showing how together you are as a couple (not to mention, it can be fun to conceive, create and then play up complimentary roles for an evening of fun).
My dad has always taken pride in dressing for an outing in a way that complements his wife. He will wait for her to get dressed and then put on a shirt or tie that (he thinks) coordinates with what she's wearing. I find this endearing (as long as it's subtle). I once allowed him to influence my boyfriend (who graciously accepted my father's fashion advice) when he was going to go tie-less for an event. My dad took the liberty of bringing out his tie rack and selecting one that matched my dress. (It did look sharp and our couples pictures are all the better for it.)
Recently, while in South Beach, I saw a middle-aged couple that had taken their coordination to a new level. It was quite evident (even to the not-so-discerning eye), that they had gone under the knife together. They literally had matching noses (perfectly shaped nostrils and pointed tips) and cheeks. They were both botoxed and bright-eyed. It would have been cute, if they both didn't look fresh off of the set of Nip/Tuck. I wondered if their plastic surgeon had a couples' special that they took advantage of. Perhaps more to the heart of the matter, one of them wanted to tap into the fountain of youth and the other didn't want to be left behind, so they dove in together. (I hope they're happy with themselves and each other, and that their union will last.)
A certain level of togetherness can definitely strengthen a couples' bond. But sometimes, if matching turns into morphing, it can become a little too much.
What are some of the most bizarre mirrored images you've seen couples embrace?
