Bodily Functions

price of love: embarassing moments canada (Dec.21.10)

There isn't one person on this planet who smells like roses all the time. Let’s face it: some of the sounds we make are more like those made by animals in the wild than civilized humans.

When that first flatulence slips out or you get a whiff of bad breath for the first time, it can be off-putting, as it often signals the start of reality. In most relationships, the girl hopes that the guy will be the first to break the silence. Something about gender roles makes it more acceptable for men to be less perfect than women when it comes to bodily functions. Yet some men I’ve talked to find it cute when their women let one rip. Interesting.

I recently had food poisoning. It was one of the most uncomfortable 24-hour periods of my life. I was woken up at 3am by a churning tummy and a salivating palate. I rushed to the nearest bathroom (an ensuite off the bedroom) and started the first of several rounds of double-ended explosions. No closing of the door or spraying of the Febreeze air freshener could save my boyfriend from hearing and smelling what was going on. To be honest, I couldn’t have cared less at that point — no level of embarrassment could outweigh the sickness I felt.

I did try to make it to the guest bathroom (when possible) after that first round. I hoped that he could continue sleeping, and I wanted to avoid him hearing me. But really, I just wanted to be comforted. So when I received a bit of a caress, I was a happy girl. The teasing that ensued didn’t really bother me (although I like to pretend it does).

I won’t say that due to that situation, I'll walk around without any sort of sensor, but now that the first time is over with, I won’t be afraid in the future. More than anything, it’s comforting to know that someone accepts me for all of me, and not just a polished version of me.

How have you handled bodily functions in your relationships?
