Conscious Compliments

price of love: dating resolutions canada (Jan.04.11)

A simple compliment can make someone’s day. This year, I resolve to consciously compliment others more often — especially my loved ones.

Instead of vowing to do a cleanse, workout more often or drink more water (although after an indulgent holiday season I’ll be doing most of these things, too), I’ve decided to spread my positive energy. I regularly have a very positive dialogue going on in my head about other people. I’ve realized that I don’t verbalize these thoughts as often as I should.

I used to have a hard time accepting compliments. I have no idea why, but they used to make me uncomfortable. Then, I read somewhere that the best thing to do is to simply look the person in the eye, and say thank you. Now, that’s exactly what I do.

Compliments often break the ice and I see what a positive impact they can have on someone. Spreading good energy into the universe will only create more of it.

When it comes to relationships, how often do you hear people complaining about their partners? It's always, he doesn’t do this enough or he does too much of that;  it’s so easy to commiserate. We can’t change someone else, we can only change our reaction.

So, this year, in the spirit of creating more positivity all around, whether it’s a family member, a friend, my significant other, or a complete stranger, I’m going to pay them compliments more often and enjoy the reaction (genuine ones of course – no one reacts well to something forced).

Happy New Year everyone.

What are your thoughts on giving and receiving compliments — do they make a difference in your relationship? Do you have any dating resolutions for 2011?
