I will not even admit how long it had been since I’d seen the inside of a salon, but suffice to say, it was not in 2010.
I was way, way overdue for a major hair overhaul, let alone a little trim or colour touchup. And with spring’s arrival coming nice and early this year (thank you, Mother Nature!), it was past time to let go of the dark and heavy winter hair, wardrobe, everything. Let there be light!
Stylists never believe me when I say how many inches I’d like lopped off. It’s usually a big chunk, since I tend to stretch out the time between my salon visits way too long. Because of this, I always need a major chop and I always want to ensure I don’t walk out with regrets of not going shorter. After all, it will grow back. But if I don’t get enough cut off, I’ll have to live with my too-long hair for what could be months. I think stylists like me because I am like a blank slate with each visit, kind of like I’m their chance to perform a pretty dramatic hair makeover since I’ve usually let it go for too long.
Such was the situation last week, when I got to that can’t-stand-it-anymore point and made the call to book an appointment. Here’s what the “before” was looking like: limp, dead ends, too long, with no colour on the first four inches of hair. Combined with post-winter pasty skin? Not pretty. In fact, pretty scary.
The stylist removed about five inches of length, added in some long layers and painted on some allover blonde highlights. Nothing groundbreaking, but a much-needed lightening in both weight and colour. And my spirits? Consider them lightened too.
(Oh, and note to self: purge closet of excess amounts of black clothing. How many black tops does one person need??)
