About Jennifer Hughes
Ottawa City Editor Jennifer Hughes has an ongoing love affair with design, art, fashion and food that began many years ago with redecorating her dollhouse or staging impromptu Barbie fashion shows. Now she unearths the best of the above in our vibrant capital city.
Oh, we are a three-ring circus on the best of days in this family now. So it was with great trepidation that we set out on the 14-hour drive from Ottawa to PEI last week. I was worried we wouldn’t make it, but we did.
We’ve learned that the trick to marathon driving with small children (and an even smaller infant) is to stop – a lot. We spent one night in a hotel and two nights with friends in Fredericton on the way down. But it has all been worth it for the ocean breezes, sunny beach days and fresh seafood.
There are many days when we feel like John Candy in that ’80s classic Summer Rental, laden down with beach toys, baby gear, sunscreen and camera all packed
into the van for a day at the beach. Not to mention the little project we’ve got going on down here (because we weren’t already busy enough).
The plan was originally to take our time on the way back home as well, passing through the States for a little cross-border outlet shopping on the way back, but that plan was ruined when I left the passports tucked away in their safe place at home. Oops. Perhaps that means I’ll plan a little jaunt stateside when we get home.
But I think I’ll leave the kids at home for that trip.
