capital city scene: national arts centre events ottawa, canada
(Nov.23.11)
I’ve had the pleasure of attending two Broadway Across Canada shows at the National Arts Centre over the past few months. Most recently, of course, Mamma Mia! came through town and it was
as funny and infectious as when I first saw it in Toronto years ago. In July, The Lion King wowed me with its gorgeous costumes and many dramatic moments. We’re so lucky to have this organization in our city. Great events in an intimate venue.
And just recently it struck me. There are a few very hard-to-buy-for people on my Christmas list, and tickets to an upcoming show (Broadway or otherwise) would make a terrific gift. Here are a few I’ve got my eye on:
For my dad: Canadian music legend Gordon Lightfoot is coming to the NAC in June. This is going to knock my dad’s socks off. I’ll have to insist on going with him to this one.
For my mom: One of her favourite musicals of all time, West Side Story will be passing through in March.
For my mother-in-law (a retired English teacher): An historical Canadian take on King Lear, set in Canada in 1608.
For my 7-going-on-17-year-old: We’ve watched countless YouTube videos of Blue Man Group, and I think he’d get a real kick out of seeing them perform live over the holidays.
Check out the NAC site and browse around. I’m willing to bet there’s an upcoming event that’s perfect for someone on your list too. Happy shopping!
