Hockey Night in Kanata
capital city scene: ottawa senators games ottawa, canada
(Jan.18.12)

Though I’m not exactly a die-hard Senators fan (I’m just married to one), I do enjoy getting to the occasional game each season. It makes a great date night, and it’s fun to cheer on the home team in their quest for the Cup (or to just make the playoffs). At a recent game (January 8 vs. Philadelphia), here were my own highlights of the night.
*That was the first game I’ve attended since the big, new scoreboard has been installed at Scotiabank Place, and the experience is definitely enhanced.
*The hockey game is obviously the reason everyone’s there, but the side show of music, fan cheers, anthem singing, entertainment and contests between periods is always a fun distraction.
*It can be hard to find decent, non-greasy food on game night. We managed to find the 212 Deli & Pub concession on the 200-level concourse (uh, right at the 212 section, obviously) serving a smoked meat sandwich platter, served with coleslaw and pickles, that was freshly prepared and very tasty.
*Attending a game is a big people-watching opportunity. There are a lot of style faux pas, but I guess one could argue that sports events have their own fashion rules (by which I mean none). Sure it’s fun to go all-out, but I prefer something a little more understated, like this cute T-shirt.
*The hockey, of course! As I write this, the Sens are on a bit of a winning streak. The night I was there, they managed to come back from behind in dramatic fashion during the third period, and score the winning goal with about a minute left. Then they clinched it by scoring on an empty net with only seconds left. It doesn’t get much more thrilling than that.
*The company. Again, such a fun date night. I think going to a game would be a great first date, or second or third. And let’s face it – when you’re married to a huge hockey fan, it’ll earn you brownie points.
Go Sens Go!
