About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Party On

the view from vancity Vancouver (Jan.20.10)

The countdown is on. And I'm getting mighty excited.

As I write this, The Olympic Games Countdown is telling me there are 23 days, 22 hours, 31 minutes and 54 seconds until the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010 begin, bringing international folk, worldwide attention and traffic mayhem to my very fair city. To that I say, bring it!

Amongst all the luging, figure skating, speed skating, bobsledding, biathalon-ing, skiing, snowboarding and hockey, there will be plenty to do for revelers without tickets (I have a friend selling a pair of gold medal men's hockey tickets for $4500, if anyone has interest...and deep pockets!). There are venues sprouting up throughout the downtown core and Richmond, from the BC Hydro PowerSmart Village to the Bell Ice Cube to the French Quarter at Granville Island to the GE Plaza in Robson Square to the Richmond O Zone to the LiveCity Downtown and LiveCity Yaletown venues with live entertainment going on every day into the night.

Speaking of night -- and nightlife -- I have a few must-attend events on my docket that should be marked down on yours, too, if you're either a local or a visitor during those two amazing weeks:

The Heineken Holland House, which celebrates the Dutch and holds 4,000 people, was one the party places to be during both the Torino and Beijing games, a place where Heineken brew will be a-flowing and the best of the best Dutch DJs will be spinning. Here's a little secret: be sure to make lunch or dinner reservations at the Lodge Restaurant to ensure entry into the celebration tent.

JetSet Crew and Canthrill, two of the city's best event production companies, are throwing 18 days of events at Canvas Lounge in Gastown -- clicking on the JetSet Crew site and listening to the beats that pop up are enough to make you want to buy a season pass ASAP. DJs that'll be on the double decks? Vancouver's own DJ Tyson V and DJ Leanne, Buddha Bar NYC's DJ Timka and MC Charles Zuckerman.

It wouldn't be a properly patriotic Winter Olympics in Vancouver without the Molson Canadian Hockey House at Concord Place. Molson beer, gigantic HD playing every single Canadian hockey game, performances by the Barenaked Ladies, Sam Roberts and Tom Cochrane and an appearance by #99 -- The Great One! -- on Wayne Gretzky Celebration Night on Friday, February 19? Three words: I. Am. Canadian.

Not to be outdone by Molson, the US of A's Labatt is opening up Club Bud at the Commodore Ballroom for five nights of unofficial Olympic debauchery. The brewski brand teamed up with big brands Burton, the NHL, Under Armour and Lululemon Athletica to throw some epic shindigs for athletes and celebrities to let loose.

Only 23 hours, 21 hours, 52 minutes and 36 seconds to go now.
