About May Globus
Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

February 14 is rapidly coming upon us on Sunday, but with the Olympics in town, Valentine's Day is getting slightly overshadowed this year.
The bright side is with the Olympics in town, there are plenty of fun, slightly less conventional ways to spend time with your sweetie pie, ways that eschew flower bouquets, boxes of chocolate and packages containing lacy lingerie.
Get thee down to GE Plaza in Robson Square for a free skate at the ice rink. Strap on a $3 rental pair of skates, hold hands, do a few laps, lament your weak ankles, then go for a hot chocolate.
Stroll over to the Westend to check out the robotic searchlight "Vectorial Elevation" installation spanning English Bay from points in Vanier Park and Sunset Beach. This interactive artwork -- created by local artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer -- encourages people to visit a website where they can submit designs of how the patterns in the sky should look. Let there be light.
Take photos of each other in the life-size people cutouts on Granville Street. It's silly and guaranteed one of the most fun things you'll do during the Games (besides somehow obtaining tickets to the men's gold medal hockey game, natch).
Do the Ziptrek Ecotours line above Robson Square. It's free -- and six stories above street level -- so make sure you have a strong stomach or a general lack of fear of heights (or even if you do!).
Check out one of the free concerts hosted by LiveCity Vancouver. High on my list are Califone, Wilco, Damian Marley, Deadmau5 and Feist with Gonzales. Be sure to get there early to snag a good spot by the main stage, because free shows often equal crowd pandemonium.
And if all else fails, then there's always the option of having a romantical moule frites dinner at Chambar.
Happy (early) Valentine's Day!
