About May Globus
Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.
It was finally official for me when the spotlight turned on over The Great One, Wayne Gretzy, at the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, just before he lit the cauldron.
The Games had begun.
While people and sports fans from all over the world mill about my city’s streets and sidewalks, excitedly chattering in a rainbow of languages around me, the biggest sartorial fans in town flooded the lower concourse of Holt Renfrew last Saturday evening for a chance to meet Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2 , myself (and Fashion Television’s Jeanne Beker!) included.
The Toronto-born (and infectiously smiley) design duo, who now headquarter their brand in Milan, not only masterminded the outfits worn by Olympic performers like Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan and Bryan Adams this year -- and ran with the torch along Mount Seymour Parkway in North Vancouver last week -- they also created a Canada-inspired, limited-edition Olympic fleece and drawstring hoodie ($350) for both guys and gals, currently available exclusively at Holts.
Waiters passed around little cups of hot chocolate as admirers waited patiently for Dean and Dan, who made their way through the lineup, signing autographs and happily posing for snapshots with fans. I watched this scene unfold with an immense sense of patriotic pride, knowing the graciousness and genuine grins of the DSquared2 boys could only come from a good, old Canadian upbringing.
Two golds, two silvers, one bronze -- and two Catens.
All I have to say is go, Canada, go!
