About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Fun in the Sun (Run)

the view from vancity Vancouver (Apr.07.10)

January was a terrible month for my personal fitness level (seeing as how I gave myself absolutely no food limit during the holiday-parties-and-family- dinners Christmas season), and February was a complete write-off (read: Olympics, pub food and brews for two and a half weeks straight).

March meant getting back into the treadmill and free weights groove, and as for April, well, it requires intense Sun Run training.

Yes, indeed: Vancouver's annual 10K run is back again on May 9, and I'm determined to beat my ten-miunte mile from last year.

Aside from making a more regular appearance -- not not just cameo -- at the gym, I've been compiling a list of things that will help see me through to the finish line at my second year of the Sun Run.

1. Stamina is important, but so are your shoes. Admittedly, I've been using runners that are way past their prime time in "runner years". Those who work out regularly are supposed to change their running shoes every five to six months. I've had mine for five to six years. Whoops. Fitness foul! To keep from further damaging any more knee ligaments, I'm going with a brand-spanking new pair of Reebok ZigTechs, whose zig zag foam bottom makes your muscles conserve energy and also absorbs impact, in order to send you forward. I currently own a pair in very bright neon red-orange. That way if I pass out in some bushes along my Sun Run, someone will surely spot me.

2. A workout bandana. These are a foolproof way to keep sweat and stray ponytail hairs out of your eyes and face. I just went to a dollar store, bought a 99 cent black and white bandana, which I then trimmed to the right size. Fold, lay over the head and under the hairline, tie the ends in a knot and you're good to go.

3. The March 2010 Harmonie Mix from DJ Pat Lok, a local turntablist whose specialty is nu-disco. They're happy beats for pounding feet.

4. My "Sweat Once A Day" Sigg water bottle. It keeps my water crispy cold -- and constantly reminds me that a life sans sweating causes laziness and apathy.

5. Running gear. Lululemon makes the best skintight running leggings (which suck everything in, to boot!), while Stella McCartney designs some fashion-forward, wick-away tops for Adidas.

6. My Sun Run package, received upon registration. It comes with a number and a computerized chip that monitors your time. Tie the latter through the laces in your running shoe, and it will register -- down to the very second -- when you cross the finish line with a big sigh of relief.

Ready, set, go.

Will you being doing the Sun Run this year? If so, what's your goal time?
