About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Just Roll With It

the view from vancity Vancouver (Jul.14.10)

In some places, the amount of physical activity or sports that people partake in is proportional to the weather outside, but with our fair city so close to both mountains and ocean (and so temperate in climate), Vancouverites are typically athletic types.

Beach volleyball, badminton, bocce and biking (recreation and sport) become increasingly popular as the mercury rises, but there's a new sport gaining momentum in town: lawn bowling

And if the New York Times is calling jousting a sport, then lawn bowling is DEFINITELY a sport.

Equipment needed? Prep clothes, Oxfords or boat shoes and a set of balls (in the literal sense).

Last week, Graham Dalik, Andrew Dalik and Duncan Gillespie of the Vancouver Leisure Society put on the first evening of the 2nd Annual Lawn Bowling Tournament at the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club, in support of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and in honor of 65 Red Roses' Eva Markvoort, a beautiful local girl who attended the inaugural 2009 tourney and who passed away from the disease earlier this year.

To celebrate Eva's legacy and to work toward finding a cure for CF -- which affects one in 3,600 children born in Canada -- friends, family and strangers put on their preppiest attire, whitest whites and best accessories (fedoras got a lot of play here) to bowl their hearts out for amazing prizes in teams of four, each group cleverly monikered (I particularly liked "The Bowlgeoisie") and dressed in theme (I saw a gaggle of Marilyn Monroes, as well as a good amount of seersucker).

In short, it was one of the best events I've been to this year. Everyone was really into getting their roll on, no matter how ridiculous they looked or how poorly they bowled.

Now that's what I call team spirit.

The 2nd Annual Lawn Bowling Tournament runs every Thursday until the end of July. Please visit the Vancouver Leisure Society if you're interested in a round or in donating to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
