About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Beauty and the Burberry

the view from vancity Vancouver (Jul.21.10)

If there's two things Burberry is known for, it's plaid and trench coats.

What's even better? Burberry plaid lining a Burberry trench coat.

And even better than that? Burberry Beauty.

Two and a half years in the making, the British fashion label -- helmed by supremely talented creative director Christopher Bailey -- recently launched its cosmetics collection at Holt Renfrew, bringing in not only the line, but Clarins national makeup artist and trainer Patricia Bensimon, who chatted about the carefully created and curated skin, glow, lips and eyes products (my personal faves: Warm Glow Beige No. 01 Natural Bronzer and Lip Glow Rosewood No. 1).

Bailey paid Burberry homage, imprinting the label's signature plaid check into the powder compacts and lipsticks and emblazoning the dark nickel cases as well, all of which have nifty magnetic closures. The colors are neutral and relaxed, along the lines of nude, khaki and trench coat hues, with hints of smoky shades (imagine a stormy London night).

Bensimon, immediately noticing that I was not a foundation girl (though their version only needs half a pump for one application, so I might convert), swept a few strokes of bronzer on my cheeks and t-zone, then topped my lips with a gloss that was a tone or two darker than my natural lip color. The changes were subtle, but effectively noticeable -- everything looked enhanced, except I didn't have to go to a cosmetic surgeon and didn't need makeup caked on to help me out.

I looked clean, and I looked classic -- and felt that way, too. It was like I wasn't wearing any makeup at all.

So until the day a Burberry trench coat is mine, these should get me through just fine.
