About May Globus
Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.
Boy, do I ever love wearing heels.
The brick walkways of Yaletown and cobblestones of Gastown, however, aren't exactly conducive for tottering around in them -- trust me, I've witnessed plenty of altitude-ambitious girls become victim to near-faceplants trying. No wonder why Vancouver girls prefer to save face by putting on footwear sans the height.
This city, casual-chic in both its vibe and sartorial style, is THE place for the slip-on shoe, in its unpretentious, comfortable glory. That glory comes in the fact that you can wear them running errands, going for a bike ride, grabbing a Colin's Lawn and gyoza with friends at
The Diamond and perusing vintage finds at
Nouvelle Nouvelle.
Here are five brands giving me good reason to store those heels away in the netherlands of my closet.
Bensimon
This French canvas sneaker brand has a decades-long history in Europe, but has recently become a shoe staple here, too. The Tennis Elastique Femme, with its shell cap toe,
est fantastique.

Roxy
The brand does great bikinis and surf wear, but it also does the Corrine, a rock-chic flat with mini studs and microsuede.
Sanuk
Comfortable, vegan and vegetarian, the June Bug is good to the feet and good for the environment (I'm a proud owner of these babies!).
DVS
Don’t be fooled by the laces on these skater girl Rico CTs – they’re just as easy to slip into as the rest of them. Bonus: they have superb B-girl style, even if you don't break or skate.
Natives
Perforations on these Corrado cools tootsies, while EVA foam material make them light as air (plus they look a little like those sweet
Clark Wallabys you always want to swipe off the fella but are, alas, too big to wear).
