About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Happy Birthday, Oliver & Lilly's!

by May Globus | Vancouver (Aug.18.10)

I love shopping at chain stores (read: Zara, H&M, Urban Outfitters) as much as the next clothing-obsessed girl, but nothing beats
discovering a sartorial gem at a boutique. In fact, the Sass & Bide top I got five years ago at a quaint shop in L.A. still gets major play in my closet.

Boutique shopping means that hundred of other gals in town won't be wearing the same thing (a huge pet peeve of mine), so I keep a mental cachet of local stores providing a better guarantee on exclusivity and originality, like Parisian-cute South Granville shop Oliver & Lilly's, which recently had its second birthday.

Cute summer dresses and heels seemed to be the de rigueur outfit at the 2nd anniversary party last week (I unknowingly went against the grain by opting for flat sandals), while the do-it-yourself ice cream sundae bar seemed to be the de rigueur food station (I tried a triad of vanilla ice cream, coconut shavings and fresh blueberries, which, oddly enough, worked).

Women floated by the tree branch centre piece, double-fisting Jones Sodas or San Pellegrinos in one hand and their sundaes in  the other, stopping to flip through racks of AliRo, Steven Alan, Alternative Apparel, Something Else by Natalie Wood, Fluxus, Vancouver's Nicole Ginsberg Jewelry and Ace and Jig (the cropped hooded top worn all night by stylist Deanna Palkowski had me chomping at the brand's bit).

Caroline Boquist and Daniel Kozlowski from WALRUS on Cambie were on hand with goodies from their unique, quirky home decor store, too, and Gloss Bar provided mini customized lip glosses to go home with each guest in dark grey felt pouches.

Who said anything about those terrible twos, anyway?
