About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Resolute Decisions

the view from vancity: new year resolutions Vancouver (Jan.05.11)

A few days before a new year hits the midnight hour on the 31st, I always find myself debating with close friends on the topic of resolutions: to do or not to do?

There's the party that argues resolutions are a waste of time, because they're so easily forgotten by the time Valentine's Day rolls around. The other half is usually quick to rebut that resolutions are an excellent visual method of building a positive pathway for growth (and, hopefully, good karma) during the upcoming year.

As for me, I err on the site of the latter (though let me be the first to say I hold absolutely no judgement against those who prefer to save pen the ink, paper and guilt of falling through on a resolution).

My list from last year was "me"-centric and personal, so I thought this year I'd be a very good Vancouverite and make one about how to enjoy the city—and what it has to offer—more than I already do.

(Drumroll please...)

Buy local fashion. I'm not shy about hitting up an H&M or Zara for my sartorial needs—the affordable price tags are a natural draw, of course, because it allows me to buy more, more often. In doing this, though, I miss out on building my wardrobe with amazing made-in-Vancity labels, like Dace, Lily & Jae, Gentle Fawn and Left on Houston. It's high time I do that.

Break bread Alfresco style. Rob MacDonald and Scott Hawthorn (the latter of Salt and Judas Goat) have conceptualized a flash mob-like dinner, where old and new friends gather for an outdoor dinner at a location kept secret until nearly the 11th hour. Folks then gather, eat and mingle, then disband. Think of it as a very fancy picnic. See a Dan Mangan show. This fellow is a local indie folk-rock favorite, with both guys and girls crushing over his musical talents and boyishly cute, scruffy mug. There's a reason all The Indie Queens Are Waiting, right?

Visit the parliament buildings in Victoria. I'd been to The Buchart Gardens a dozen time as a kid (when family came into town), but we never did stop by the temple of BC legislation. I'm thinking high tea at The Empress Room right after would be nice, as long as there's a liberal serving of cucumber sandwiches.

Take a class at Blim. Book binding and baby moccasin-making workshops? Count me in. Lately, a growing number of my friends have been welcoming wee ones into the world, so those moccasins would certainly be handy as shower gifts. Plus, tennis lessons are so last year.

Plan a dinner party with friends at one of the city's rogue underground restaurants. I hear 12B is amazing, especially since—beside your healthy appetite for a unique multi-course meal—you get to bring your own own wine and music. I'd tell you where it is, but then I'd have to, well...you know.

And on that note: Happy 2011!
