Sing a Little (Holiday) Song for Me

the view from vancity: holiday songs canada, Vancouver (Dec.07.11)

I'm a Christmas holiday-oholic.

A sucker for pretty Christmas trees, finding funny holiday cards and eating festive goodies, while I find it one of the happiest times of the year, some find this season stressful. They say that singing is relieves stress, so there really is no better excuse to belt out a string of carols than right now.

So while you're wrapping a pile of presents, stirring some eggnog rum and baking batches of red and green-sprinkled sugar cookies, here's a mini holiday playlist — mixed with old and new — to have on in the background.

"Santa Baby" by Madonna. This holiday hit was made in the '80s, as Madge was coming out of her liberated "Susan" phase and slipped into a slinky Marilyn-esque persona. It was released as part of a charity celebrity Christmas album — and it hasn't lost any steam since.

"My Only Wish This Year" by Britney Spears. She was once deemed Madonna's next in line for pop princess status, until her meltdown in the mid-2000s. I've always rooted for Brit Brit to make a big comeback with a track that rivals "Toxic". This holiday love song is how I like to remember Miss Spears: bright, beautiful and full of hope.

"White Christmas" by Bing Crosby. The ultimate classic. I need not say any more.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Judy Garland. No one compares to Judy. With the help of sparkly red shoes, she made us all appreciate that there's nothing like going home.

"Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" by N'Sync. Admission: I kind of love this song. It speaks to the teenage girl that I once was. Justin's curly blonde fro in this video is nothing short of amazing, as is the cameo of Gary Coleman as one of Santa's elves.

Bonus track: "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey, featuring Justin Bieber. This 2.0 version of Mariah's classic is such a guilty pleasure, on account of the Bieber being in it. You have to admit, the kid has talent. And absolutely adorable in his leather-and-flannel jacket in Christmas colors.

Now, sing your hearts out!
