About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Twitter Is The New Black

Vancouver (Mar.17.09)

My name is May Globus, and I'm Twitter-aholic.

For me, my very first encounter with this rapidly booming form of social media was through somewhat (okay, religiously) following Julia Allison, the pouty-lipped, New York-based journalist-slash-talking head who quickly became an internet sensation and a celebrity in her own right (though many may beg to differ on account of something called shameless self-promotion).

Now she gets front-row seats at Fashion Week, dresses loaned from Betsey Johnson, a cover on Wired, a regular column with Time Out New York, stints on Fox Business and a site called Non-Society, which she runs with her comely besties Meghan Asha (the hot tech geek) and Mary Rambin (the cool, blond fashionista).

So how did Allison do it?

By spilling her entire life and guts online -- and with the help of Twitter, natch.

Let's back it up for a second, though.

What IS this strange web phenomenon, and more importantly, why is everyone suddenly tweeting like it ain't no thang?

Barack Obama used Twitter to sway the young vote during his presidential run, and even basketball star Shaquille O'Neal is on the bandwagon, chronicling his days (and mostly where he likes to get good grub) at The Real Shaq. Er...and yes, I just might be one of his loyal followers. Oh, and some of my fellow Sweetspot gals tweet, too.

Basically, Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows people to continuously provides updates on whatever the heck they want, as long as it's not over 140 characters. Signing up for an account is easy-peasy -- once registration is complete, you can tweet from your laptop or your phone. Over time, you begin to amass a set of loyal followers, and you also end up following others (word of advice: deny Hot_Bikini if they try to tweet with you). It's the ultimate marketing tool, really. Does the person sitting next to you at the coffee shop smell foul? Then let all your devotees know that second. Love your new shoes? Tweet it. Just watch a new Funny or Die video clip? Share it with the masses.

Sure, there are those who tweet about horribly inane things happening in their lives, like "just walked the dog" or "bought tuna for $.99 at Buy-Low". But then there are those who have witty commentary on life and those who pass along links to interesting information designed to expand our horizons, making tweets fabulously entertaining -- and speeding up the onset of carpal tunnel completely worthwhile.

It's somewhat of a love-hate relationship at times, this Twitter and I, but for now, the pros outweigh the cons, so I plan on sticking with it for a long time.

Excuse me, I have to go tweet now.
