About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

Cab Fare

black cab sessions Vancouver (May.05.09)

I'm thanking whomever is up above for the day that Jono Stevens was born.

I've never met the guy -- and literally never heard of him till last Friday -- but I hail him for conceptualizing the best music website ever made: The Black Cab Sessions

Basically, the site's producers approach regular cabbies (who, unfortunately, come sans tambourines) and, dependent on whether said cabbie is cool with the idea, they hop into traditional British black cabs and record via video one-song, acoustic performances from some of the best acts on the musical circuit. You know, just minor names like Brian Wilson, Spoon, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, My Morning Jacket, Beach House, Peter Bjorn and John, The Cool Kids, Bon Iver, Doves, and Fleet Foxes

Sometimes cabbies don't understand this amazing idea and turn down the opportunity, but for the ones that are game, they allow the rest of us to have an intimate, close-up, semi-impromptu session in what is essentially a mobile studio for no more than five minutes. Brian Wilson and his band did a rendition of his Beach Boys hit "California Girls", Lykke Li sang her intro through a megaphone, Cold Wars Kids brought a violin, The Cool Kids beatboxed, and one of my favorites of all the sessions -- My Morning Jacket -- lugged an omnichord on board.

Time to turn on the meter.
