Hitting the Runway

Calgary, canada (Oct.07.09)

Couture. Is there a word that rolls better off the tongue?
Last night, Alberta Fashion Week kicked off in true couturier style, as local designers Dutch Blonde (Camille Prins) and alala (Adejoke Taiwo) launched their highly anticipated spring 2010 collections.

Both Project Runway Canada (season 2) finalists hit their stride on The Banke catwalk, a perfect locale for some extra pomp, swank and circumstance.

After a drink and some mingling, my girlfriend and I took in both shows from our spot in second row.

I was quickly enamoured with Dutch Blonde’s mini-dresses, in both neutrals and vibrant blues—hues fervent in the collection. Bold ‘70’s stripes made their appearance throughout her collection, as did tights—a fall wardrobe staple re-invented in soft shades and colors for spring.

But it was during the alala show that I found the dress I covet—a pink and lime fan-printed frock perfect for attending an upcoming spring wedding. Or luncheon. Or party. Or sitting at home watching Melrose. (Wardrobe multi-functionality is key when explaining designer purchases to a significant other. Cost per wear, ladies. Cost per wear.)

That being said, here are just a couple of Fashion Week’s upcoming highlights at which fantasizing about your spring wardrobes is quite simply a mandate:

Designer Mash-Up Show (October 7 at Seven Resto-lounge)
Featuring shows by Beatrix, Emery Eden and more.

Designer Trunk Sale (October 9 at The Banke)
Featuring jewellery designers Alex Hunt, Cynthia Hou, and others.
