The Gospel According to Pope: Part II

cal gal Calgary, canada (Sep.29.10)

There is not much that is coveted more on a woman’s social calendar than the girl’s weekend away. It’s the chance to unwind, let loose, and just be, well, girls. To have a concert tied into the excursion, well, that’s just the frosting on an already delicious cake. (Ok, make that a lemon tart for me, please.)

This past weekend, my friend Mellissa and I flew to Seattle WA for a few days to attend an exclusive studio concert by one of our new musical loves, Ron Pope. The pre-cursor to Friday night’s show at the famed Avast! Recording Studio (the voices of Tori Amos, Death Cab for Cutie, and Queens of the Stone Age have been heard there), was a shopping blitzkrieg.

Kinda/sorta a given element to most girls’ trips, Mellissa and I did our due diligence when it came to injecting healthy doses of hard-earned Canadian dollars into the economy of our southern neighbours. (What are neighbours for? That being said, I’m sure our husbands could withstand us being a little less neighbourly in the future…)

In any case, shoes, boots, hats, tights, and various other fashions were tried on (and eventually bought) amidst laughter, and in-between the need for fresh air.  Dresses at Seattle couturier Luly Yang were gazed at in awe (ahh to have a custom gown made there…and have a place to wear it!), as were the charming sloped San Francisco-style streets of downtown Seattle.

The Pike Place Market was visited, crab legs devoured at the famous Crab Pot, and new tattoo was acquired at Madame Lazonga’s Tattoo.

Then of course, the crowning part of the weekend, the experience that was the concert by Mr. Ron Pope. (When you’re this good, they call you Mr. Ok, maybe just me and Mellissa do, but it is certainly well-earned.)

I know not everyone listens to music the same way so it might sound strange to some, but I teared up once or twice (especially during my fave track The Right Way), simply feeling the music around me.

Nearly three hours of one amazing song after the next (with previews of songs on the upcoming record), band mates (and artists in their own right) Zach Berkman and Savoir Adore’s Paul Hammer backed up the man of the night flawlessly.

And afterwards, hangin’ with guys was like the second lemon tart of the night.

It was one of those magical nights (and weekends) that feed the soul, and won’t soon be forgotten.

Here’s to an encore!
