Costume Conundrum

cal gal Calgary, canada (Oct.27.10)

As a kid, the Halloween choices were usually pretty simple. Once I graduated from princesses and the likes of Strawberry Shortcake (ah the sentimental nostalgia cometh hard…), my favorite musicians or movie characters were usually emulated come all hallows eve.

Of course once I abandoned trick or treating (say junior high) and entered the world of Halloween parties come high school, somehow everything became just a little sexier. A witch now became a sexy witch; a bunny became a Playboy one; and coming dressed up as candy corn somehow just didn’t cut it anymore. (Flashback to grade 9 and my ill-chosen Julia Roberts a la Pretty Woman costume. My math teacher proceeded to call me ‘sunshine’ for the rest of the year. Yes, it was as creepy as it sounds.)

On that note, I now wade through and navigate the world of adult costuming, of which there are still really only two categories: nurse, or sexy nurse. So with two parties this coming weekend that require me to play dress-up, I am simply at a loss for something original.

I am of course treating this task with much more emphasis than it probably deserves, and I should just pick a costume and be done with it. To that end, I have browsed the endless selections at Calgary Costume Shop, The Costume Shoppe, and The Masque, and can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. (Now if only I knew what I was actually looking for…)

Really, I think that I just want to find use for my red tutu skirt that I bought months back and worn once, and a stupidly expensive corset from She that doesn’t see the light as often as it really should. Sexy Pirate? A ballerina perhaps? Not sure, but I am quickly running out of time.

Any suggestions?
