cal gal:christmas wish list Calgary, canada (Dec.08.10)

Well, it’s that time of year. Where shopping takes on an almost guerilla-style approach—hitting the malls guns blazing in the name of finding that perfect bag for mom, or that yet unknown special something for that special someone.

The reverse is also true—fielding constant rapid-fire questions from loved ones about what you want for Christmas. In all honesty, gone are the days where I would itemize a carefully selected list for ol’ St. Nick. (Colour coding and back-up options were always included.)

These days, joys come via the little things: a thoughtfully written card, some fresh-baked treats, and quality time spent with family and friends.

But in the spirit of elevated holiday fantasy (much like I fantasized about--but never did receive--that Dalmation I asked for about 10 years in a row as a kid and teenager), here are some gift-receipt-need-not-be-attached wish list wonders. (Whatever Santa can’t fit unto his sleigh, can be forwarded to the appropriate individuals for birthday distribution, come five or so months from now.)

The high priestess of all party dresses has to be this season’s purple and black beaded and feathered cocktail dress by Badgley Mischka. Can’t think of anything more stunning on a New Year’s Eve dance floor. ($795 at Holt Renfrew)

I’ve often been told I’m a pretty cheesy girl, and almost always wear my heart on my sleeve. Well, why not the finger? Elsa Peretti’s Open Heart ring is just the right blend of sentimentality and elegance.
($270 at Tiffany & Co.)

Next to mom’s Christmas cookies (which really are a work of art), there’s nothing I’d rather indulge my sweet tooth with than the melt-in-your-mouth macarons at Yann Haute. Hazelnut and Blackcurrent & Violet please!
($1.85 each at Yann Haute Patisserie)

While I’m usually in one pair of heels or another (I was recently asked by a co-worker if I owned any flat shoes), I am not opposed to a pair of comfortable flat boots. These military-esque knee-highs by Dolce Vita make the list.
($190 at Gravity Pope)

As the old adage goes, you don’t have anything if you don’t have your health. To that end, a 10-class pass from Moksha Yoga should get me back on the right path come the new year. (Post mom’s cookies and macarons of course.)
(10-class pass $135 at Moksha Yoga Calgary)
