Diet Detour

Calgary (Jun.15.09)

Welcome to my D-Day. Otherwise (and rather non-affectionately) referred to as Dastardly Diet Day. I have some excess pounds to lose (don't we all?), and after losing some weight on my own this past year through decent eating and regular exercise, I have hit the dreaded plateau. No matter how hard I work my Body Step and Body Pump classes, the scale does not move in my favour, stubbornly stuck on the same number for the last two months. Time to get drastic.

A co-worker of my husband's mentioned she had just completed the South Beach Diet, and was raving about her success. I have always been wary of fad diets, but my frustration had reached a boiling point. I want to lose about 20 pounds in the next 3 months, a somewhat doable and lofty goal, but I needed to give my body a kick start to once again start losing the weight. That means a change.  I cannot exercise any more than I have been, so that means a daily diet redux.

After some initial research, I too decided on the South Beach Diet, as in the long run, sustainability seemed more likely than most other 'diets'. That being said, I advise anyone who knows me to keep a safe distance from me for a while. I am (voluntarily!) giving up a part of my regular diet that I have never lived without: carbs and sugar. A kind of a detox if you will, ALL carbs (breads, pastas etc.) and ALL sugars (including fruit and some starchy veggies!), are to be stricken from the meal vocabulary entirely in Phase 1, which lasts 2 weeks. (Or 14 long, never ending, torture-filled days...)

Focusing solely on lean proteins, some skim dairy products, and loads of veggies,  Phase 1 promises to be a challenge and a definite battle of wills. I must tearfully part with Crave-o-licious Cupcakes from Crave, and whisper 'until we meet again' to the Stiff Lemonades at Joey Tomatoes. (My summer patio pre-requisite.)

I know it won't be easy, but hopefully sharing my struggles with y'all will help me stay on track. Until next week's progress report--or lack thereof), wish me luck, an iron-clad will, and blinders when I pass my neighborhood Starbucks.

And to all of you unlucky enough to have to spend regular time in my presence, I apologize heartily and affectionately in advance.
