We've always liked surf culture—those cool phrases like "hang ten", the colourful bathing suits, the wind-swept hair. Yet we never fancied ourselves as actual, well, surfers. Now that Roxy and Quiksilver have partnered with Bruhwiler Surf School for the eighth year in a row, however, we can rethink that.
Head to world-renowned Tofino, B.C., one of Canada’s only surf locales, on BC Ferries (including driving time, the entire trip takes 6.5 hours from Vancouver) or fly by Orca Airways. Surf camps run nearly every weekend in August (choose Roxy Camp for girls only or Quiksilver Camps for coed), and the school is owned by top professional surfer siblings Raph, Joey, and Catherine Bruhwiler, who even came to pick us up in their fabulous Mercedes ’Mog.
Where to stay
On Friday evening, check into the gorgeous Long Beach Lodge (1441 Pacific Rim Highway, 1-877-844-7873; from $229/night), the most luxurious resort on the island. Indulge in dinner in the Great Room, then rest up for a sweet Saturday spent in the water.
Where to eat
On Saturday night, head to Shelter Restaurant (601 Campbell St., 250-725-3353), a favourite of both locals and visitors. The log cabin-like room is unpretentious and the perfect setting to enjoy comforting dishes made from organic, local ingredients.
On Sunday, before hitting the road to head home, stop by Sobo (311 Neill St., 250-725-2341) for the best fish tacos in B.C., polenta fries, and other lip-smacking dishes.
For $175, we got our gear (including wetsuits), instruction (such as ocean safety, etiquette, and wave knowledge), and practice time supervised by the Bruhwilers.
