Dear Calgary Weather

calgary coolhunting: a letter to calgary weather canada (Mar.02.11)

Dear Calgary Weather,

You’re slowly turning me into a raisin. I know it’s not your fault, per se; however, could you please back off the extremely cold temperatures? Could you also inject some moisture into the atmosphere while you’re at it? I’d be ever so grateful.

I know, I know, I was born and raised in Saskatchewan, so I should know how to deal with dry weather, but I guess my time spent out east in the sweltering humid summers (and bone-chilling damp winters) made me complacent. Remember that Vaseline Intensive Care commercial where the woman scratched the word ‘dry’ into her skin? This morning I scratched ‘help’ into mine.

It’s not that I dislike you for this situation you’ve put me in. Actually I quite love your clean, crisp air. And I adore your chinooks — please send another one, and make it last until next December.

Just to let you know, instead of giving into a life of flaky skin, I’ve decided to get some advice from a few well-established Calgarians on how to stay hydrated in your challenging climate.

My mom claims that her arsenal of dry-skin revivers protects her delicate visage against your moisture-zapping ways. For starters, she uses La Mer The Moisturizing Gel Cream every day. It’s pricey, but she says its consistency is the lightest she’s ever used and that a little goes a long way. She also swears by the St. Ives Intense Relief Hand & Body Lotion she received in her Look Good, Feel Better package because “it’s not greasy and has almost no scent.”

My friend — and roommie — Natalie doesn’t hesitate for a second when I ask her how she maintains her glowing skin all winter long: "Water," she replies. Makes sense! She drinks six tall glasses of the stuff a day. She also slathers Glysomed Hand Cream on her hands to get them in top form for when she prays for this weather to end.

My friend Sarah kisses chapped lips goodbye with Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25. She’s tried everything and this one really works. She also stocks up on Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner to help cleanse her skin without drying it.

And me, Calgary Weather? What do I use to ward off your flaky personality? Have I learned anything in my short time here? I sure have. My precious locks get a regular dose of the divine Moroccanoil Light Treatment. Have you ever wondered why the evil eye I give you when you deliver sub-zero temperatures is so sparkly and vibrant? I pop a drop or two of Visine Contact Lens Dry Eye in them for full effect.

So take the hint: leave us alone. The only raisin I want to resemble is of the California variety.

Yours truly,

Ricky Zayshley
