The best home décor shops make you feel like you want to live there.
Well, we had our bags packed after we first visited Atelier 688. The well-edited space showcases original, handmade furniture, lighting and art by local artists and designers in a loft-like set-up.
The unique showroom is part store, part gallery and part studio for owner Alex Jowett’s photography business. Every few months the space will be revitalized with a new theme and new design. All items are for sale, or similar bespoke pieces can be commissioned.
For the launch, Jowett has curated a rustic “Canadiana” collection featuring lighting and industrial design by Zac Ridgely (Ridgely Studio Works), furniture by Bradley Denton (designer of the Harbord Room and Czehoski restaurants), carved wood artwork by Christopher Roberts and furniture by Matthew Hunter (host of the Re-inventors). Many of the featured pieces, including a fabulous carved out 1920’s kayak chandelier by Denton and Jowett (all prices by request), are made from reclaimed objects – making them one of a kind and environmentally sound.
More than living up to the mantra of “Where Art becomes Life,” Atelier 688 made us want to move right in (or, at the very least, take everything home).
