Primp and Circumstance

Needing a little primping and healing time, but not wanting to travel too far, we zipped out of the city to a-one-hour-away retreat, Bromont's Spa Balnea. And once we arrived we let the therapeutic treatments and trendy décor whisk us away. Balnea SpaThis latest "boutique spa" to hit the luxurious-yet-accessible spa scene, Balnea is nestled in the Eastern Townships' mountains and surrounded by a picturesque landscape.

We started off our oh-so-necessary and (okay, we'll admit it) self-indulgent experience with the signature service: The 90-minute Four-hand Balnea Massage ($185). (The Balnea boasts nine types of massage such as a California or Shiatsu with prices ranging from $70 to $185+.)

Once our muscles were spoiled, we made the rounds of the thermal rooms. From the steamy Turkish bath and saunas featuring panoramic views, to the "sweat lodge," our pores enjoyed a real workout. In between hot spots, we made sure to soak it all up in the outdoor hot tubs, surrounded by snow-covered grounds. For $35, we enjoyed full-day access to all the spa's thermal treats (as opposed to $45, the full-day rate sans massage or another treatment).

This Nordic destination also features an ultra-stylish lounge and a deliciously new Slow Food Café, where we treated our tummies to carrot and curry soup ($5) and chicken with mandarin salad ($10).

Well rested and on our way back to the city, we know we'll return during the summer months to work on our tan and yoga skills (there's an outdoor terrace ideal for both).

Ahh, the circumstance of it all: We get to be city slickers and commute to relaxation.
