There was a time when the word socialite didn’t connote DUIs and jail terms, parties were for talking to people rather than just looking at them, and knowing the names of multiple premium vodkas didn’t count as being cultured.

And while we’re not looking to escape the modern world (our cell phone will be pried from our cold, dead, mid-texting hands), we were relieved to see the approach The Society has taken with its urban club. (Bringing to mind Holly Golightly rather than an overexposed Hilton.)

Founded by two Toronto ladies who were frustrated with their free-time options (enough to quit their jobs to focus on the venture), The Society specializes in offering up uniquely themed events with a cultural twist.

How else would we have access to an underground boxing match, literary salon with the author, rooftop movie screening, DJ lessons and more? Plus, the crowd feels more like a collection of friends of friends, with the majority aged 25-45 and the guy-gal ratio pretty even.

The yearly membership fee is $100 and signing up was as simple as visiting the website. From then on we’ve had access to a whole host of sweet and secret events and activities (we do love an in-the-know experience) and we only pay for the ones we want to attend. There’s even a loyalty program in the works for extra perks. (But really, they had us at “Hello, and welcome to Tennis Camp…”)
