It was love, in the form of an L-shaped chocolate brown leather sofa with matching foot rest. The sort of chic beauty a girl could live with forever. And pay for forever, too.
But what did we discover? It retails for less than $5000 in a Montreal showroom called Barami Furniture, where we also found Barcelona-type chairs and fake Barbara Barry-like armoires at discount prices.
This destination for design groupies requires neither a trust fund nor a sugar daddy. Stylists, set decorators and coiffeurs spend hours cruising through Barami’s three-story building filled with over 2,000 reproductions, including Eames-style chairs ($300 to $600) and Heal’s-like glass tables ($1300). The leather loveseats inspired by Le Corbusier sell for only $1500, while the zebra print rugs from Argentina go for $900. Barbara Barry’s authentic bracelet chair typically retails for $2,800, but Barami’s reproduction sells for a third of the price. While the original Eames La Chaise sells for over $8,000, you can find a facsimile at Barami for a quarter of the ticket. And it looks great with a walnut base.
Meandering through the store’s lower level, we stopped to sit on a Barcelona two-seater ($1300) and plan how to re-decorate the living room…then the bedroom…then the dining room….
