While we couldn’t resist the up-beat shades of green, coral and cobalt this summer, we (eventually) had to face reality and accept autumn’s arrival. So we’re packing away our sundresses and embarking on a mission: Finding chic (and unique) separates in richer, more subdued shades.
Boutique Unicorn is the new hot spot for fashionistas, devoted to that timeless colour, black. Even the décor is a strict mix of black and white accents, including refinished antiques, chandeliers and vintage cameras. Owners Mélanie Robillard and Amélie Thellen are careful buyers, courting Canadian labels, importing exclusive lines from Sweden and hand-picking vintage coats and sweaters from secret sources.
Browsing through the racks, we grabbed a twist-front black top ($270) by Mini Market from Sweden and headed for the change room. Then we tried on wide-leg denims ($96) from Wesc and a military jacket ($280) by Montreal design darling Eve Gravel. We fell for the batwing charcoal sweater ($130) by Kitchen Orange, as well as Dace’s blousy, black wool sweater dress ($210).
Humming along to Euro songbird Jaymay on the CD player, we inspected the updated clogs ($225) by Swedish Hasbeens. Like almost everything else in Unicorn, the clogs were distinctive—and black. Mission accomplished.
