Love handles, muffin top—whatever it’s called, it’s got to go! But time on the treadmill alone won’t cut it: Only hardcore exercise will burn off those extra inches we’ve noticed since Thanksgiving.
Gathering our courage, we enrolled in boot camp (it worked for Demi Moore in G.I. Jane, right?). Fitness guru David Siscoe runs an exceptional studio in the Côte St. Luc car wash, which is attached to his personal training outpost, Siscoe Gym. Shouting orders and keeping everyone hopping, Siscoe motivates his recruits to speed through a circuit training program loaded with cardio, pull ups, jumping jacks, push ups and floor work.
Everyone works at their level, but expect to work harder than you ever thought possible. Our abs burned after 10 minutes of something called “Ball Slams.” David said they’re good for midline stabilization (read: core strength), and we felt them zapping our abs.
Classes are held outside, weather permitting, and there’s room indoors for the entire boot camp this winter. It costs $25 per 60-minute session, but reduced-rate packages are available. Having survived a session or two, it won’t be long before you and your fellow “recruits” become fast friends.
Then we can get back to enjoying muffins the way nature intended.
