Sending Bikes to Ghana

I love chocolate. It is my happy reward; it is the kryptonite to my inner fickle demon bitch-goddess. And now, thanks to Cadbury, it is my contribution to a program that aims to provide 5,000 bicycles to Ghana.

Here's how The Bicycle Factory works: buy something made by Cadbury, go to thebicyclefactory.ca, enter the UPC code, and watch it magically (ok, digitally) turn into a part on a bike. It takes 100 UPC codes to "make" a bike, so it will take a group effort to reach the goal of 5,000 by October of this year.

What kind of difference does that make? Imagine what a bike can do for a child that has to walk over an hour to school - after walking a few hours to get water. Michael Linke, on-the-ground activist in Africa and founder of Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) in Namibia, explains it in real terms: "A single bike can carry up to five times the weight, go four times as fast and travel four times as far as a person walking and it can change a person's life and a community's future."

So go buy something sweet. Or a pack of Dentyne gum. Or even Halls, if you're feeling sick (or just like the taste of cough drops - I don't judge). There's a long list of participating products, making it very easy to help out. (Not that I needed much push to eat more chocolate.)
