core valuescanada (Oct.28.10)

What are your core values?

We all have core values that have been established from our past experiences. We like and dislike things because they either complement or contrast with our values. Our values are the single source of our motivations, and if we satisfy our values it gives us true happiness.

Now, how does shopping come into play?

We all love shopping! But we must only buy things that truly satisfy our values (and fit our budget). When shopping for a power suit, ask yourself “What will this suit give me?” Is it respect? A sense of achievement? Leadership? When you wear it, you’ll really be wearing that value. Be your desired result before you start your meeting or interview and watch it manifest itself.

Code your purchases to your accomplishments.

Make a list of all of your professional or personal goals and “carrot” yourself to achieving it by a material reward. If you dominate at huge presentation at work and get a raise, reward yourself with some fierce Prada’s. Use the cash from your raise, and every time you wear them you’ll be walking in your own success. Having amazing shoes is great enough, but now being coded with your value of achievement? Priceless.

Now look at the reverse of that situation.

Do you ever buy with money you don’t have – because you’re bored or feeling blue? Those shoes are loaded with negative emotions as opposed to the positive ones that re-enforce your values. Buy with your values – not against them.

Shopping for other people works that same way.

Think about what the other person’s core values are, and then buy them something appropriate. It is creativity? Give them lessons in jewellery-making or photography. If it is freedom, give them a trip (if they’re lucky). Is it the value of family like one of my mom’s core values? My family spends the holiday together visiting a distant place every year. We were just in Egypt, and we’re going to Australia this year together. We satisfied freedom, family and adventure in that gift!
Shop for the sweetest items by shopping through values.
