The warrior princess is the woman of Lucian Matis' spring collection.
No, not Xena, silly. Think more princess-y than that.
With the lightest whisper pinks and chalky mauves paired with steel blues, silvery greys and golden taupes-- this is the palette my 6-year-old self would covet.
Not that there was anything immature to the collection (except for maybe the embellished headgear--Orthodontists take note: You need to get on this for high school girls everywhere). For every soft, petal-like dress that came down the runway, there was a gladiatrix-esque underpinning. Studs poked out from shoulders and darted along hem-lines, stretch mesh blustered out from the bottoms of dresses like airy cages. Exposed zippers (nope-not going anywhere for next season for Matis) and bias tape details gave each dress a rawness, but there was nothing that felt unfinished or undone.
My favourites--and there were many--included a bruise-blue dress with a corset-like webbing of bias tape around the waist (the band-aid dress solution? This seemed so much more wearable than any of those bandage dresses we saw last season), and a heather grey jersey dress which balanced heavy studding with glinting sequins around the neckline.
Last but not least was Monika Schnarre donning a gown (to be auctioned off in support of Look Good Feel Better) more reminiscent of Matis' days as a wedding gown designer--and the only formal gown to speak of this season. As she floated down the runway, tufts of ripped chiffon around the hemline rose and fell like smoke. Definitely the belle of the ball.
Or maybe I should say "Warrior Queen".
