The final show of the week may have started late, been a zoo to seat (I don't know how those volunteers do it) and had the voice of god (aka, our beleaguered announcer) in near desperation to get people in the runway room early to stop milling about so they could light the thing.
But I don't think anyone could have walked out of that room saying it was anything less than amazing.
Dare to Wear Love was a special collaborative event produced by Hoax Couture featuring 25 Canadian designers and in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (with a goal to raise $100,000 to fight against HIV/Aids in Sub-Saharan Africa).
From the Nathaniel Dett Chorale opening, to drumming intermission and a rousing speech from Mr. Lewis himself that left few dry eyes in the house (and made everyone forget what a long week it had been), this is a show worth talking about.
It also happens that I love these kind of collaborative efforts (like March's Red Dress shows). The cause is important, the creativity flows and people let loose and have a little fun with the whole thing (case in point, Jessi Cruickshank's Zoolander-inspired strut and serious mugging that she dubbed "red steel").
Each designer took fabric sourced from Africa and made it their own.
From a wide popped-collar cocktail dress from Greta Constantine to the structured hips and shoulders of Evan Biddell and two pocketed full-skirt dresses by Wayne Clark (one a bell-shaped halter, the other strapless and gathered at the waist), there were some serious stand-out looks. More than can even be named to be honest.
And without taking away from the fun, jovial outfits and evening, the biggest standout for me might have been one of the stories Stephen Lewis told before the show started: of a little girl, orphaned by AIDS and in possession of nothing, sobbing with gratitude when told help was on the way...because she needed pencils and paper for a test the next day at school.
Great fashion, a great time and overall, an undoubtedly great cause and way to end the week.
