In spite of a late — and we don't just mean "fashion late" — start to last night's presentation, David Dixon managed to elicit cheers, hollers, and maybe even a few misty eyes at his Fall 2011 LG Fashion Week show.

Beginning with "Sweet Sixteen," a celebration of his 16 years in the business, Dixon sent six of his favourite models down the runway sporting outfits from previous collections, including "Reunion" (Spring 2007, an emotional homage to his late parents), "Walk to Freedom" (Spring 2009, a tribute to South Africa) and "Barbie" (Fall 2009, pink, pink and more pink), against a backdrop of nostalgic videos and voiceovers.

For his fall/winter collection,"Escape to Jakarta," the designer took inspiration from warmer climes and the exoticism of the South Pacific. Using bold prints like black-and-white ikat, red leopard and large polkadots, Dixon imbued the collection with an upbeat intensity. Strapless gowns with oversized bows across the bust recalled some of Valentino's greatest hits, as did the multiple lipstick-red dresses that made their way down the runway. Texture also played a large part in the collection, with plenty of ultra-feminine ruffled dresses begging to be worn on a red carpet.

Statement-making tribal jewellery from designer Rita Tesolin complemented many of the dresses, lending the luxe fabrics and dramatic, sweeping lines of the gowns an elegantly offbeat feel. Dixon's collection was a study in soigné allure and cocktail-hour sophistication, with the daring prints keeping the looks fresh and modern. His show might have started late, but the dose of glamour it gave Fashion Week was perfectly timed.
