TIFF special correspondent Jordana Divon catches Estelle's performance at the Diet Coke party and gets to know the charming, witty singer.
Before I hit the Hoxton’s Diet Coke party with Ms. Emma Yardley to check out Estelle’s divine performance, I had the opportunity to sit with the down-to-earth diva for a little one-on-one time.
I’m playing it down in that paragraph, but I was really excited. Really, really excited. It doesn’t matter how many famous people you interview: when you happen to be a big fan of the celebrity in question, the butterflies come hard and fast. Thankfully, Estelle’s kind sponsors plied me with buckets of pre-interview Diet Coke as we waited for her to arrive. I don’t know if it actually quelled my nerves, but it sure as hell kept me alert. As a bonus, I was so buzzed and talking so quickly that I managed to pack all my questions into the 15-minute interview slot. So, er… thank you, Diet Coke!
Estelle breezed in to the room and took the time to greet everyone by name. Freshly arrived off a plane, she sported a cute black hair rag, sleek purple top, and a giant pair of designer shades because, as she joked, “I haven’t done my eye makeup yet,” and was planning on a much-needed nap.
Disarmingly warm, witty and candid, the American Boy singer opened up about the struggles she faced while making All of Me, her new, most personal album (set for release in November,) how she feels about the hit single that made her a star, and revealed exclusively to Sweetspot what she’d do on her fantasy day off. Hint: it’s the opposite of glamorous.
