Michael Kors Spring 2012
It’s been a busy year for Michael Kors; He celebrated his 30th anniversary, opening the Paris boutique on Rue St. Honoré and debuting the new NYC Collection flagship on Madison Avenue and, he also got married this summer. So, we can’t really blame him for taking a more stress-free approach to his spring collection. As the show notes stated, it’s about “relaxed sarongs…an easy laidback attitude…warm sunset shades of amber, sienna and cinnabar.”
Inspired by “memories of Africa and the rustic modernism of the Lebombo Lodge,” the collection included the aforementioned sarongs (on a male model unfortunately), ponchos, capes, and tie-dye and animal-print caftans.
Overall, the collection was maybe too relaxed. This is a man who has built his empire on perfectly combining sportiness and sexiness and although there was a bit of both in this collection, the “Afriluxe,” as he called it, dominated in what looked like a thrown-together last-minute kind of way.
But lose the poncho (even model Magda Frackowiak couldn’t pull it off), the tie-dye pants and the patchwork animal-print dress and it’s all uphill from there.
The pops of orange were a breath of fresh air in an otherwise predominantly sea of muted hues, the flowing dresses with leather details were gorgeous and Kors’s nod to the fanny pack with little leather belt pouches around the waist was adorable (I’d wear one). Even though there were some low points, I don’t know many girls that wouldn’t happily go on a Michael Kors safari, complete with a rocking remix of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
