After a three-year hiatus, Toronto fashion favourite Arthur Mendonça made a triumphant return to LG Fashion Week last night, presenting a stunning collection of glam gowns and sexy separates that had editors swooning.
Mendonça, who shuttered the doors of his business in 2008 and spent a year in Milan learning about the Italian fashion industry, proved that his time away was well spent. Models sauntered down the runway in luxe, expertly tailored dresses, blazers, skirts and trousers with a decidedly Euro-chic vibe. The clothes were straight out of a sophisticated jet-setter's dream wardrobe: splashy floral prints in luscious, tropical hues adorned a number of day-to-night dresses, while graceful gowns were given a huge dose of sex appeal thanks to thigh-high slits, sheer chiffon skirts and asymmetrical shoulder detailing.
There were plenty of pieces to covet for those of us not on perma-holiday, too, like an off-white linen shift and matching blazer with artfully fraying edges, perfectly cut royal blue cropped trousers paired with a neon yellow silk blouse, and a fabulous gold pencil skirt, again matched with a pop of bright neon yellow on top. Other key colours included deep raspberry, electric purple and a soft, faded red, as well not-so-basic black (mostly leather) and shades of cream, beige and mocha.
If this collection represents the "new" Arthur, all we can say is welcome back, Mr. Mendonça — we missed you.
