Pink Tartan Spring 2012

Pink Tartan is always one of LG Fashion Week's hottest tickets, and last night's show was no exception. Designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran presented her Spring 2012 line to a packed house of boldface names (including editors from Glamour, Marie Claire and Teen Vogue), industry insiders and fashion fans. The crowd responded enthusiastically to the parade of streamlined sportswear on display; Kim is known for her feminine, sophisticated separates, and this was one of her most polished collections to date.
"I'm having a thing with the '60s right now," she told me when I asked about her inspiration for spring, " and I wanted to figure out how to make it modern and wearable." The starting-off point for the collection was this photo of androgynous male model Andrej Pejic chanelling Brigitte Bardot — a surprising (and refreshingly unusual) source of inspiration. Wearing a short skirt, high heels and mesh top, Pejic also walked in the show, but not everyone realized he wasn't just one of the girls. "She had really big feet," said Kim's daughter.
Highlights included beautifully tailored silk wool cigarette pants in scarlet and deep blue ("I love Power Stretch fabric — it's a knit that really acts like a woven. It holds its shape and is so resilient," said the designer), a bold navy-on-black polka-dot print on a dress and skirt, and a two-tiered shirtdress that would undoubtedly become a staple in any woman's closet.
It was the closing look — a stunning shift dress covered in hand-sewn iridescent shell buttons masquerading as paillettes — that garnered the most attention, though. Despite the incredibly loud music pumping through the venue, the dress (and the matching skirt that came before it) jingled very audibly as the model strutted down the runway. "I'm so over sequins. I've done it so much," said Kim, explaining why she chose buttons over paillettes. "This dress feels like really chic armour when it's on, and it weighs like 50 lbs. I want to wear it to a beach wedding."
