David Dixon's Spring 2012 Collection
See all of our Toronto Fashion Week runway reports.
Talk about saving the best for last — well, second last, to be precise. David Dixon's Spring 2012 presentation, the penultimate show of LG Fashion Week, was one of the strongest of the week. The designer produced a cohesive, tightly edited collection of ultra-feminine gowns, cocktail dresses and tailored separates that lifted the fashion crowd's spirits and had anyone and everyone with a smartphone scrambling to tweet their approval.
Dixon set the tone for the collection by opening the show with a spectacular Easter-yellow gown, which was followed by a parade of covetable pieces, including a high-waisted pencil skirt in metallic brocade (the matching coat was stunning, too) and showstopping black-and-white butterfly print gowns that were sophisticated, elegant and playful at once.
Sticking to a palette of black, white and yellow, Dixon experimented with texture, embellishing yellow skirts with enough silk laser-cut flowers to create a ruffled effect and giving simple skirts a lace overlay that ended just above the knee, revealing the smooth, shiny fabric underneath. The gorgeous accessories added another layer of texture to the collection: dramatic necklaces with long beaded strands and shoulder-grazing earrings toughened up some of the evening's prettiest, girliest looks.
After five days of shows, Dixon's collection was a breath of fresh spring air — exactly what we needed to end Fashion Week on a high note.
