Backstage Pass: Eddie Maleterre

lg fw '09 canada (Mar.19.09)

It's not every day that the Official Make-up Artist for L'Oreal Paris is in town. But when he is, we wouldn't miss the chance to talk to him.

Backstage at Fashion Week (he's the Artistic Director), we got the chance to pick his brain on makeup for Fall 2009 and what's hot for right now (all while he worked his magic on a beautiful redheaded model...)

Sweetspot: What are the new trends in makeup for Fall 2009?

Eddie: It's a continuity of this past fall. It's still the smoky eyes, it was with a purple base in 2008, but now it's with a brown base. We keep the idea of the smoky eye, but go with dark brown to black.

Sweetspot: What trends should we be getting rid of?

Eddie: It's hard to say, because I'm a makeup artist. I think anything goes. When you want to have fun, when you want to wear certain clothes, you can play with makeup every time. If you want to do just a black liner, you can, if you want to do something nude, you can; everything is good. Just go with whatever looks the best on you.

Sweetspot: For an event like Fashion Week, where it begins during the day, and goes well into the evening, how can you apply makeup that will easily go from day to night?

Eddie: Well, for example, this season you can wear makeup very, very soft, very natural, with beiges and browns during the day; you can wear something more dramatic at night. You can go really soft for the day and apply a darker colour at night. Add an eyeliner or just a darker shade of shadow or mascara.

Sweetspot: Should summer makeup be different than fall/winter?

Eddie: Yes, very different. This summer, it's more about pinks, green; pop colour. Next season, it will be more dramatic; brown, dark brown and black. Keep the brighter colours in the spring and summer, and the darker ones for the fall and winter.

Sweetspot: Will that always be the case? or will those colour rules change with the trends?

Eddie: It will change every time. If you like the idea of colour; the pinks, purples, greens, you can put them on top of the dark colours in the fall and winter.

Eddie Maleterre first began working with L'Oreal Paris fifteen years ago, and has been the Artistic Director at LG Fashion Week since 2002. He can also be seen on Project Runway Canada.
