Backstage Pass: Eric Del Monaco

lg fw '09 canada (Mar.20.09)

While we got to talk to L'Oreal Paris Official Makeup Artist Eddie Maleterre yesterday, a trip to LG Fashion Week wouldn't be complete without talking to Mr. Eric Del Monaco, Official Hair Artist and Colourist for L'Oreal. He let us pick his brain, and filled us in on everything we need to know to keep our locks up to date (and as fashion forward as our outfits..)

Sweetspot: What can we expect in hair for Fall 2009?

Eric Del Monaco: A lot of beautiful texture, almost felt-like looking hair. Contrary to what we did for last season, which was very polished, very coiffed, while we're still having an outer shape that's very clean, and very thought out, the texture within that shape is very rough looking. There's a lot of loose little hair, some flipping, some curling but then all roughed up. Feminine and sexy but not super pretty, kind of like the far west klondike days, when women would be working the fields but they would be sweating so much that a couple hairs would come loose; that kind of feel. For curly and wavy hair, this is the time to wear it in it's natural state. The bigger, the more deconstructed the shape, the better.
For those who want to dress it up or be a little more daring, just let it go. If you're going to let it go, it's important to have a really interesting hair cut. If you have really curly or wavy hair and it's a shorter length, the haircut is so important. Different shapes, different volumes; a little more volume on the sides and not so much on top. It all has to do with interesting shapes, volumes and textures.

Sweetspot:
We've been seeing less and less of the updo for special events. Is it gone for good?

Eric: You know what, even at the Oscars this year, I was surprised because there was a lot of long; there was a lot of texture, a lot of curl, but still long. Any kind of updo that I like to do now is more like a backdo; go back as opposed to up. If your looking from the front, it looks like she has a chignon, or a little ponytail, but in actuality, when she turns sideways...
But you know what, of course it's going to come back at some point. We were working on a sketch the other day with a designer, and he brought me this beautiful updo, but it was right up [at the top of her head] and I was like Oh no, not anymore, let's do it back here.

Sweetspot:
What kind of advice can you give us for Spring '09?

Eric: Right now, for the spring and summer, a lot of hair that's gelled back; very, very feminine. What I like about this look (he points to a few models who have their hair side parted and swept back into a bun) is that it could be a daytime look. She's going shopping, so she just puts her hair up, but then she's going out at night, and she doesn't have time to change it. She can just go home, freshen it up with a little hair spray, put some shine spray in it; make it really glossy and shiny. She can use some hair ornaments, some jewels and then she's ready for a wedding, a cocktail party, the opera...anything.

Sweetspot:
Speaking of hair ornaments, we've seen a lot of flowers, feathers and bows.  Does anything go?

Eric: Anything Goes!! What I like for right now is a lot of jewels, but if we're going to do this look for fall, there's a lot of really heavy jewellery pieces, heavy jewels, really ornate ornaments.

Eric Del Monaco trained in London and Milan before he became Official Hair Artist and Colourist for L'Oreal Paris in 2001. He can also be seen lending beauty advice on Project Runway Canada.
