We love new products, trends and tips but ever wondered about wearing them in real life? Each week we’ll take on a test drive, from the newest nail colour, to playing with perfume or seeing how long that hairstyle actually takes and share what we find (sweet, not-so-sweet and everything in between).
The Nose Knows
test lab: perfume canada
(Oct.16.09)

The Inspiration: We never judge a book by its cover, but we admit that we're intrigued by certain perfume bottles. So we did a blind "smell test" of four new perfumes (including one men's fragrance) to see if the scents lived up to our expectations.
The test:
This week's testers: Nadine Silverthorne, Sam Speisman and Jes Watson
Nadine Silverthorne:
What she thought she'd like: Harajuku Lovers
Why: I've always loved cutesy things and I have a Harajuku Lovers T-shirt that I live in on the weekends. The little girls on the perfume bottles are ridiculously cute. I am a 35-year-old child (this is why I have kids).
- Chloé: Powdery. Smells like a boudoir. Nope.
What she thought it was: Chloé
- Harajuku Lovers: Smells like candy and flowers and it’s my fave!
What she thought it was: Harajuku Lovers
- Davidoff: Smells like a yummy man. Reminds me of my high school boyfriends and making out in closets at house parties.
What she thought it was: Almost want to change my last answer, but I'll say Prada
Nadine's Winner:
Harajuku Lovers. It should be Sweetspot's signature scent!
Sam Speisman:
What she thought she'd like: Chloé
Why: I love Chloé bags and clothing, so I figured I'd love the scent as well.
- Chloé: Didn't like this one at all. I found the scent totally unappealing. It smells like I could buy something similar at the dollar store.
What she thought it was: Harajuku Lovers
- Prada: Yuck! This scent is definitely not for me. It reminds me of a fragrance that could have been sitting around for years. It smells musty and old.
What she thought it was: Prada
- Harajuku Lovers: Love it! Has a light vanilla-y scent, which reminds me of summer. It doesn't seem like something for older women, more of a young fragrance.
What she thought it was: Chloé
- Davidoff: Not bad. This was really fresh, light and airy. It's familiar, could be similar to Davidoff's famous fragrance, Cool Water.
What she thought it was: Davidoff
Sam's Winner:

Definitely Harajuku Lovers "G".
Jes Watson:
What she thought she'd like: Prada
Why: I know that it costs a pretty penny, so shouldn't it smell nice? Plus I love the bottle. It looks opulent.
- Chloé: Heavy roses, very British. Almost...aristocratic? I feel like the woman wearing this would go horseback riding, drink afternoon tea and tend to her country garden.
What she thought it was: Chloé
- Prada: Whoa! Now that's a strong scent. It's...older. It makes me think of getting uncomfortable kisses on the cheek from my grandma. Not exactly sexy.
What she thought it was: Prada
- Harajuku Lovers: Sweet. Really sweet. Like candy. I don't really like it. It smells like something I would wear to the bar in university. I feel like I'm too old for it.
What she thought it was: Davidoff
- Davidoff: Hmm. Sweet again. This is kind of bright and fun. It's not as cloying as the one I just smelled. There's more edge to it, less vanilla.
What she thought it was: Harajuku Lovers
Jes's Winner:

Give me roses and romance! Chloé all the way!
