Test Lab
We love new products, trends and tips but ever wondered about wearing them in real life? Each week we’ll take on a test drive, from the newest nail colour, to playing with perfume or seeing how long that hairstyle actually takes and share what we find (sweet, not-so-sweet and everything in between).

Shake and Fake

test lab: dry shampoo canada (Jan.01.10)

The Inspiration: When you're constantly on the go, there isn't always time for a full wash and blow-dry. These dry shampoos promise to refresh and revitalize without water.

The Products:
  • Frederic Fekkai Au Naturel Dry Shampoo, $27
  • Cake Satin Sugar - Hair and Body Refreshing Powder, $18
  • Greg May Dry Clean Only Dry Shampoo, $22
The Tester: Samantha Speisman

The Test: For me, day-old hair is rarely acceptable in public. Washing each morning has become an unquestioned part of my routine. I tried each of these dry shampoos, in place of my morning wash, to see which ones would actually make me feel comfortable enough to leave the house.

Scent

Unscented

Strong and sweet.

Light, refreshing scent; enough to cover up an evening out.

Usability

I love the chiseled tip of this bottle. It allows you to focus on your roots.

It is in a similar canister to baby powder (with the rotating closure on the top) so pay attention to where you shake. (I suggest wearing a towel when applying!)

This one is a spray, which I love. Easy to use, you can flip your head upside down to get underneath or just spray from above and it's colourless, which is nice.

Oil Absorption

Initially, my hair looks great. But within an hour or two, the effects seem to have faded.

This one does a great job of absorbing oil and refreshing your hair. Just as good as baby powder, but not white!

This one also is great for oil absorption. With a few sprays to the roots, it ALMOST looks like you washed your hair.

Overall Thoughts

I thought this would be my favourite, since I love most Frederic Fekkai  products, but ironically, it was probably my least favourite.
I like that it comes in two different shades, as using a light powder in dark hair never turns out well (and for my taste, the scent is best enjoyed in smaller doses).
I love this dry shampoo. It refreshes and is very easy to use. I just wish I didn't use it up so quickly!
