We love new products, trends and tips but ever wondered about wearing them in real life? Each week we’ll take on a test drive, from the newest nail colour, to playing with perfume or seeing how long that hairstyle actually takes and share what we find (sweet, not-so-sweet and everything in between).

The inspiration: We love our luxe gems, but with daily wear, our necklaces, bracelets and rings can quickly turn from bright to burnished. To restore sparkle, we're testing out regular household items that are reputed to work double-duty as jewellery cleaners and comparing them to their official jewellery-cleaner counterparts.
The products:
- Birks Jewellery Sparkle, $12. Available at www.birks.com.
- Hagerty Jewellery Polishing Cloth, $11. Available at The Bay.
- Professional Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner Machine, $48. Available at www.amazon.ca.
- Windex, $5. Available at most major drugstores and grocery stores.
- Colgate toothpaste, $1. Available at most major drugstores and grocery stores.
- 7UP, $2. Available at most major drugstores and grocery stores.
- Polident, $5.50. Available at most major drugstores and grocery stores.
- Dish detergent, $4. Available at most major drugstores and grocery stores.
Sweet tips: Take caution when cleaning pearls. Most cleaners (including all of the ones we've used) are too harsh and will damage pearls. If you plan to clean your jewellery over the sink, be sure to cover the drain and always wear gloves to protect your skin.
