Test Lab
We love new products, trends and tips but ever wondered about wearing them in real life? Each week we’ll take on a test drive, from the newest nail colour, to playing with perfume or seeing how long that hairstyle actually takes and share what we find (sweet, not-so-sweet and everything in between).

Testing 5 Hand Creams

test lab: hand cream canada (Mar.11.11)

The inspiration:
We might not be as extreme as this hand model, but we know the value of a good hand cream. Four sweetspotters  blind tested five moisturizers to give their dry skin the boot. On a scale of 1 to 5, the creams were rated on how well they moisturized, absorbed and whether they felt greasy.

The testers: Anusha, Gabrielle, Marina & Monica

The results:

Sample A (Burt's Bees) Average Rating:

Moisturizing: 4 out of 5
Fast absorbing: 3.5 out of 5
Greasy feel: 2 out of 5

Everyone shared a fondness for the ultra-creaminess of this one, but weren't taken with the overpowering scent.

Honey & Grapeseed Oil Hand Creme, $15. Available at www.burtsbees.ca.

Sample B (Lise Watier) Average Rating:

Moisturizing: 4.25 out of 5
Fast absorbing: 4 out of 5
Greasy feel: 3.75 out of 5

This one had a citrus scent that the testers were divided one (one tester likened it to a tasty creamsicle!). It wasn't a thick cream and was well liked by the group.

Hydra SOS, $22. Available at most major drug stores.

Sample C (Glysomed) Average Rating:

Moisturizing: 3.75 out of 5
Fast absorbing: 3 out of 5
Greasy feel: 1.5 out of 5

Everyone agreed that a little went a long way with this one, and too much led to very greasy, slippery hands. The scent wasn't too strong and it moisturized well, but it wasn't a favourite.

Hand cream, $4. Available at most major drug stores.

Sample D (Nivea) Average Rating:

Moisturizing: 4
Fast absorbing: 2.5 out of 5
Greasy feel: 3.75 out of 5

Testers were really divided on this one. The cream was extra thick and didn't absorb as quickly, and though it moisturized well, it did leave a bit of a greasy feel.

Hand cream, $7. Available at most major drug stores

Sample E (Kiehl's) Average Rating:

Moisturizing: 4.75 out of 5
Fast absorbency: 4.5 out of 5
Greasy feel: 4.5 out of 5

This one was a favourite of three out of the four testers. Their hands felt super-soft after using, without a greasy feel. Of all the ones tested, this was the cream testers said they'd continue using.

Ultimate Strength Hand Salve, $18. Available at www.kiehls.ca.
