London has always been celebrated for its Public Houses. On a recent visit across the pond, we were spoiled for choice from great little locals to divine gastro versions serving heavenly Chef’s specialties. Here’s a list of our fave’s at the moment:
The Churchill Arms. Nestled in the heart of Kensington Church Street, it's comfy cosy (blazing fireplace), buzzing with people and steeped in history. They also serve some of the best Thai food this side of South East Asia. (119 Kensington Church Street, London, W8 7LN - Tel: 0871 3328723)
The Porchester. A friendly neighborhood pub with a previous reputation of being a tad on the shady side. Thanks to the neighbourhood's clientele, it has now been polished up to reveal a gorgeous gastro-pub that serves up a mean Bloody Mary.
The Prince Bonaparte. Reading the menu in this fine establishment, you would be forgiven if you guessed you were at Heston Blumenthal’s famed restaurant The Fat Duck. The Bonaparte is a fab example of a gastro-pub done right with an inventive menu full of British classics with modern and ‘local’ twists as well as a great selection of micro-brewed pints. (80 Chepstow Road, Westbourne Grove)
The Westbourne. We came for the local charm but we stayed for the gastro menu. As one of Notting Hill's most popular pubs, we would be remiss not to mention this on our London Public House hit-list. With a fresh and changing daily menu full of locally sourced ingredients, traditional ales and lagers, we can’t wait to return for the patio in the summer.
The Rake. On Winchester Walk in Borough Market. After a busy Saturday or Sunday shopping excursion through the market, end the day here with a pint from their incredible beer range – close to 150 (bottles and on tap). They also have a lovely heated beer garden. (14a Winchester Walk)
Warwick Castle. Tucked away down an alley in the posh leafy neighborhood of Little Venice, this pub has all the charm of a great local. A great place for a quiet pint in the afternoon with your newspaper or a rowdy evening vibe for several pints with friends. (6 Warwick Place)
The Bridge House pub. A great little pub along the canal. But the real feather in their cap is that its also home to the to The Canal Cafe Theatre. Located above the pub, it hosts the News Revue - the longest running comedy show in the world, verified by The Guinness Book of Records. Fancy a laugh?
