One Culturite spent the 4th of July long weekend visiting family in Massachusetts. An annual July long weekend tradition is a visit to the quintessential Massachusetts town of Stockbridge (the home of the late Norman Rockwell’s artist studio for almost two decades). If a road trip through the countryside to a lazy yet charming small town is up your alley, here’s a few tips on what to hit during a weekend stay.
Eat: Widow Bingham's Tavern - Housed in the Red Lion Inn, this small pub full of ancient relics and nostalgia hanging from its walls isn't as old fashioned as it appears. The menu is fresh and local, with a delicious take on old favourites. Culturites recommend the hand-carved roasted turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo served on fresh baked bread.
Sleep: The Red Lion Inn - This historic Inn has been a mainstay for travelers passing through or holidaying in the Berkshires for the past two centuries. It definitely feels like you are living in a Norman Rockwell painting, with its quintessential big front porch, four poster beds and creaky floors. Favourite activities include sipping tea porch side in the morning, sunning by the pool in the afternoon and cocktail hour in their garden café.
Caffeinate: Anna’s Coffee Shop - Offering the best coffee in the Berkshires, this is always the first stop in the morning or before a country drive.

Get Cultured: Norman Rockwell Museum - Formally housed in the Old Corner House on Stockbridge’s Main Street, but has since moved to a stunning 36-acre site with an incredible view of the Housatonic River Valley, the museum was designed by the architect Robert A.M.Stern. This museum is a mainstay and one that must be visited if in the area.
Listen: Tanglewood – Visit this magical outdoor amphitheatre in the middle of the Berkshire Mountains. This Culturite, whose family has been going here for three generations, recommends the lawn tickets and a gourmet picnic with wine to accompany (they prepare and pack it for you if you order in advance). It feels like summer camp for symphony enthusiasts!
